The Pendulum Effect

Jeane: After that first segment of a dream (see To Have and To Hold), I remember a few images from another dream. I’m not sure of the sequence, but in one part I’ve gone to a resort. It’s in the countryside, and to get a spa treatment you have to go outside to another building and down some steps.

There’s a deep green hot pool with women there, and that’s where the massage takes place – underwater. I dip once in the pool, after a couple had gotten a treatment, but I don’t want the full treatment because I don’t like the idea of the treatment being underwater.

That’s one part of it.

John: What you’re describing is an image that comes back into Creation because there’s something apparently that’s needed.

This inner process is like a swinging pendulum and the object is to be right over the top of something, but in a grounded way. If it swings up to where it gets too far off the ground, then as it comes back it doesn’t stop right on the ground, it swings further into the unconscious (the hot pool in the dream).

In other words, your earlier image showed you rising up off the ground among the structures, and now you’ve swung back from that elevation back down into your unconscious. The degree to which you traveled off the ground (gaining insight) becomes the degree to which you go back into a greater veiling (the unconscious). This is a process of testing to what degree you can be open and receptive to something in a greater aspect of the masculine, which is represented by your swings off the ground.

As you lift off the ground, you start to sense imbalances there – as opposed to a wholeness. Then the pendulum swings back, as a way to return to groundedness. You can visualize this pendulum as the out-breath of something coming down, which is masculine, and the in-breath as something coming back, creating a linkage (feminine).

When you’re on the up slope of the pendulum, you’re off the ground and feeling what the structures are like and you only go so far before you realize that you need to come back down. But you don’t come straight down into Creation.

The degree to which you struggled with something on the up slope, or didn’t accept it, you swing back past the original point and down into the unconscious. To the same degree that you go into the unconscious, you realize that you have erred in the other direction. You don’t like that, and you have to try to come back.

In other words, you have a similar reaction in the unconscious where you notice that things aren’t quite balanced and you want to come back to that one particular point.

The pool is green, right?

Jeane: Yes.

John: Which is Creation. I’ve never thought of it like that, but it’s true. That’s what happens and you go back and forth.

In the spiritual path you try to learn how to put something in perspective. You’re hearing something from the rootedness and the groundedness, and then you have subtle inner nuances that arise that swing you out, and you’re trying to let those go, or to relate to them and pull them back to the rootedness.

So, in having to contend with yourself, you find you now have to take in a bigger picture in terms of the inner levels. Thus the statement “As above, so below”: the deeper you’re able to go into yourself the more you’re able to break through the barriers, or the hiddenness, that lock you away or that keep you separate from a greater reality.

Now, the outer and the inner are supposed to come together in the human, so the first phase of development requires going into the depths of yourself. As you do this, you’re getting more energy. You’re redeeming yourself.

As you redeem yourself, you have some freedom which can start to swing up and take on more of the masculine that had previously been too much in your nature because you’d gone astray from your God connection. When this energy is astray, it loses its power, its recognition, and its place – you’re out of balance.

So as you start to face this part of yourself, you have more energy and freedom so you tend to indulge (which is a return to an ego-based separation from the whole). So you swing back to see if you can function more in the spirit energy.

When you awaken the spirit energy that lies within, and it becomes more visual to you, that is the more masculine energy. So, the degree to which you can go into this depth is the degree to which you can face your unconscious, and is the degree to which you can take on a certain element of the masculine that touches the world.
