Even on a spiritual journey we can find ourselves making attachments to ideas and concepts that are just as much of an indulgence, in terms of our ultimate goals, as any material obsession. As we have talked about, the spiritual realms are very refined compared with the coarseness of everyday life. As we refine, we begin to see more and more how everything can be affected negatively when we act from personal identity. Jeane: So my dreams were kind of scattered.
I remember a very early dream, it felt like I was at a building where my folks used to have a department store and I have to go to the bathroom. So I go upstairs in the store, but the room is transformed up there. It’s suddenly this wide open room, but it does have some fixtures kind of just spread around it somewhere. It might have a toilet one place, it has a bathtub another place, it has some other kind of porcelain container another place, but they’re all being used for other things. I’m not even sure they’re hooked up to a drain or something.
It’s like I can go use them, but it feels like one doesn’t know how they’re working or what they’re working for, like maybe they’re being used as planters, or stuff just being thrown in them. It’s just kind of confusing. That’s the first dream.
John: It’s a dream that takes you out of… ordinarily when you have dreams and you’re going upstairs to something, and you’re doing this and you’re doing that, your attention is upon opening up or finding something of a greater value, or higher-self nature, in terms of the way you look to unfold, or come to grips with, your surroundings or your environment in life.
But in this dream it has a different tone to it, in that the surroundings and whatnot in life are simply there, like you have the department store or whatever it is that has a certain viability or expression, and then what exists above that is something that is… I mean your mind is going to try to make it something that you can figure out how to use, but it’s something that essentially has no value. It’s just there.
So what is happening is to the degree that you may have identified with aspects that unfolded and maybe was on a type of path of evolvement, this pulls the rug out from under any kind of identification – even in terms of the symbolic references that that infers – to a point that you don’t hold onto anything that is like that either, because you’re going to a point or a state that is an emptiness in which there is nothing. There’s no progression to something that gains viable energy objectively, to the expense of something else.
In other words, there’s nowhere to go. And this idea that there’s nowhere to go, the rug of that is pulled out from under a person when they have a dream like this because the tendency in dreams up to this particular point is for one to see themselves on a spiritual journey and to then have images of things that inflect the unfoldment of that spiritual journey. And now you’re having a dream that’s pointing out that any idea that there is such a thing as going somewhere, well, you end up with finding out that it’s all fairly illusory.
The idea that could even be a type of ideal in certain ways, at certain intervals of one’s development of being able to go to something above a vibrant or family business, all of a sudden losing its sense of meaningfulness because there’s nothing there; you have to dig deep to try to make something illusorily meaningful out of what’s there. All of that is designed to kind of take away a type of indulgence that you’re now meant to be able to drop.
The reason why something like this is important is we all carry a certain kind of way that we see ourself or have as a mannerism, as a consequence of being on a spiritual path, that we tend to reflect or talk or speak or act from. And you tend to see this in, for example, a dream group that’s animated, when suddenly it’s animated and everybody wants to talk at once. The key is, can you pull back from that because all of that, too, is a type of bait, that too is a type of something that is caught in a motif yet? And we’re meant to not be caught up in something like that, either.
It’s just like the teacher taking and throwing a subject matter out there and then standing back and watching everybody dive into it with their ideas. It means they’re caught in that. They’re still holding on to the tantamount fabric of something like that, and they should realize that all of that is meaningless. And to realize that they don’t buy into every inflection, or into inflections, in terms of trying to make it into something that you can’t make it into because it’s never possible, not really. But when you’re on a spiritual journey you can pretend.
