It should be great comfort to realize that what we seek on a spiritual path is also seeking us. We may be the seeker, but we are also the sought. And it has become easy for us to dismiss this idea and think that, in such a huge universe, how could we, as individuals, matter? But that is the first premise of human life: to respond to the call of creation that is built in us. And this is why we feel these strange longings, and get those moments of emptiness, because we are disconnected. That is the call we are meant to respond to; but it is not a wake-up club on the head, because it has to be our free choice. Jeane: Well I had been reading a book about a woman detective in Norway, so in my dream I’m that woman detective. I’ve gone back to a small hometown, somewhere in Norway, to fill in for the chief of police while he’s gone on vacation.
And, while I’m there, there’s a murder of a man I knew in my childhood, and I’m investigating the murder. So it feels like all night I’m investigating that murder, going back and forth. But then, towards morning, I realize that I was the one that had committed the murder. Maybe there had been another murder that was like it, that was years ago; now I realize I did it whether I was at a party and I was drunk and I just forgot, I don’t know, but now I realize that I did it. I have to turn myself in. That’s the only dream I had.
John: That’s a good dream. That’s a dream in which there is something that is seeking you. In other words, you’re the detective. In that regard you could call it a higher self. The higher self is a detective. I mean that’s just putting a label on the fact that there is an inner beingness, you know some would call it God, that is seeking you. And that you are denying this fact when, in actuality, you turn out to be the one that is sought.
Now what’s interesting is, let’s do something with this because this is the theme of the dreaming last night, and let’s do something with this in terms of what is being purported in a way that is being laid out in a very subtle and quiet way – not meant to rock any cages, or disturb any equanimity, because everything that he does, including all the practices he gives and everything, that he just throws out there as kind of suggestions, by and large fall by the way boards.
Now what he was emphasizing, that I don’t know how many people realized, he waited until the last day to bring it up, and when it’s brought up on the last day you might say that there might have been a buildup to this from all what occurred in the days before to get to a point like this. And the point that he’s bringing up is not a way of being that is in keeping with the way the Chistis are inclined to see themselves. It is in keeping with the way that the Naqshbandis are expected to see themselves, but don’t.
And that is that there is, as your dream indicates, something that is trying to come across and grab our attention. And we may deny it, and be looking in other ways and regards, but it is nevertheless occurring.
In other words, in your dream, it’s the police detective and the denial, the denial that we dream, which is the way most people in our dream group portray it. They deny that they dream, yet in itself they are the guilty ones. They do carry that coming through them, whether they are aware of it or not, like to pretend that it isn’t happening for them, but everyone dreams prolifically and they refuse to admit that they’re the guilty ones. In your dream, they’re the ones that have committed the mayhem or the murder.
They refuse to recognize that this is them. In other words, the ability to bring through them something of a greater wholeness of their soul, of a beingness, that is the true them, that they refuse or deny because they choose to be lazy or asleep. And then he suggested, and of course this isn’t going to necessarily work but it might help, he suggested that they set alarms to wake up every 90 minutes until they realize that this process is alive, and quickened, and is functioning in and through them.
Well, just like most all the practices he prescribes, unless he gives specific guidance with those that he’s guiding that they start doing this, they are probably just going to hear this as just so much of all of what he represents and it will kind of fall by the way boards. And I’m not sure how much it would work, anyway, because when you set an alarm it wakes you up every 90 minutes, until you’ve trained yourself to be able to shift straightaway and drop, something quickly, which is what his practices were designed to do in terms of the thought patterns that we carry, you know, you’re just suddenly going to wake up and be blank because your thought patterns will still be somehow or another circulating in a louder capacity and be in the way.
I still remember how it was when I first started trying to realize that I dreamt, kind of also in this state of denying that I ever dreamt, and as soon as I started to realize that I dreamt I started to realize that I had been dreaming before and had been just purposely blanking that out. And that, for me to pull out the dreams, I had to apply what I call focus and attention that was very stringent because it was so easy for these dreams to be fleeting.
So it’s very, very interesting that you have a Sufi path that has, for all intents and appearances, gone along for a long, long time, refers to the fact that there can be dreams but doesn’t specifically direct one’s attention to focusing upon them like you have in the Naqshbandi path.
And now, all of a sudden, here you have a Chisti path that is accentuating the importance and even offering a technique or two to try to activate the significance of the dream world. And then you have a Naqshbandi path that has gone on accentuating the importance of the dream world, with students who are in a state of having pulled away from it and believing that they only dream when they need to dream, which is very, very infrequently – instead of realizing that, in terms of what is meant to come through them, that it needs to be very, very continuous, that you can have this kind of as something of a lucidity, from within, that is dream-like, with your eyes wide open.
You’ve heard the statement that we are the dreamed, and who’s the dreamer and who’s the dreamed? It just keeps on going. In other words, there’s the whole recognition of the importance of something that comes through, that is meant to come through.
