The image of fishing in a lake, or any body of water, in a dream is indicative of reaching into the depths of the unconscious. So, when the fish are dead, and the water itself is dead, what is being said? When we bring something from our inner depths, we bring it to light and into our awareness. Yet if we are not really open to it, or ready to face something, our resistance will not provide the right “bait” to land a big fish. (At the end of this post there are instructions and a link to download this recording to your computer.)

John: So, in my sleep dream, I am in an imaginative condition that I am living out in the outer world, and realizing, in terms of doing this, that this is futile in terms of the heart. 

So, in the dream, I go fishing in a lake that is dead. I use a dead fish to try to catch another dead fish in a dead lake. In other words, the image is, it’s like the skin of a fish and I take the hook and I extend it through. And then I take and I throw that out like that, as if another fish is going to bite into it. 

And it repeats, too, I travel with this. The way I travel with this is I’m with another person who knows how to fish in this lake and has a certain kind of bait that they put on the thing and they go out and they hook a great big fish. And I just settle back, I don’t put any line in the water or anything, and they catch this great big fish. 

But their cockiness in pulling it in causes the line to break because the fish jumps and snaps the line, it’s like in the ocean, huge fish. And so, then, I was short on bait. And what he has is a type of lure, and he had a couple of those, and he’s the expert at fishing. And so I ask him how this has worked out for him. 

He says, not very well, it doesn’t work very well, it hasn’t been his experience that this works. So I don’t quite have what it takes to be properly fishing. I’m noticing in traveling back that there is a way of doing it, but I am remiss in that at this point in time. 

And so that was an aspect of the traveling of the dream. And then, so back to what I dreamt directly, the fish I use for bait is disgusting and half rotten. I hook it and drop it to the bottom of a lake that I float around; it’s not a very deep lake. I can see the bottom, you can see there’s no fish in it – that’s why it’s a dead lake. And so I realize there are no fish in this lake. 

So, in this dream, I’m a kid with no sensibilities following in this fishing adventure going with my dad. And, in the end, my dad goes to a place where we catch fish, where we’re able to catch fish. We go and we catch a bunch of fish. And then we weigh them on a particular machine, and the machine says that the fish sell for $13 a pound apiece. 

And when we have them weighed up, it’s as if we’re thinking we will just leave and get away with the waywardness, out from the nearby building comes the Game Warden who has waited patiently, and we have to then pay $13 a pound a piece for the fish in our possession. That’s our fine for thinking we can get something for nothing, and for my dad and I to think we could dupe the system. 

You could say that this whole thing starts off with an awkwardness. The fish is a consciousness; it’s a dead consciousness, it’s a consciousness that lacks any motion and any movement. And then, in the traveling back in it, there is a way that it works. But this isn’t how it works. And I don’t quite have a connection to that, but I have seen it. And in this here, what I tend to see is nothing that continues the frustration in that what is done is not done with quite the right attitude. 

And the meaning is, when in the imaginative of the outer we go around telling ourselves that what occurs there is real – even though we know better. And we need to instead listen to our sensibilities, or from the heart instead of the mind. And that if you stay too much with trying to force something to happen you cause a type of exhaustive lie as a pattern that results in a disaster over, and over, and over again. 

This is what it is like for us, and everyone who acts like us, to go around and pretend that what is going on is of value to them. A value in terms of who we are. We are lying to our heart, and the heart of the world. The time comes when such self-deception catches up with us at every turn.

We have spoken before about water images and fish images as being representative of the unconscious. Sometimes it can be a small body of water, or an ocean, or a small fish or a big fish. Here we see a human-sized fish that’s following our dreamer around and trying to communicate with her. And, as you might expect, that makes her a little uncomfortable. Sometimes dreams try to communicate subtly through their symbolism, and sometimes the symbolism jumps out of the water as a huge fish and flat-out says it’s trying to communicate.  (At the end of this post there are instructions and a link to download this recording to your computer.)

Jeane: Okay, in the second dream, I’m living with a group of people and at one point I leave the house and I discover there’s been a huge snowstorm. And I’m trying to make it down the hill and back in a snowstorm.

At one point it feels like I even really slide and come right to an edge where I could go over, but I seem to stop, and I’m studying out how to go down and around. Then it feels like I’ve come back and I’ve gotten my sister and we’ve left, but when we want to make our way back what’s happened is we’re kind of almost like flowing uphill, and everything around us is in upheaval.

Whole buildings have just kind of either fallen, or gone up in the air and turned over, or whatever’s going on, and what used to be the road that we took downhill it’s become all like a muddy river almost, and we’re trying to make our way kind of against the current and getting back.

And there’s even things that look like alligators on the side and underwater, or you think like they can be after you, but they don’t seem to bother us. So we make it back towards where we’re going, and I’m even going somewhere towards work, and someone notices these big fish in the water to the side. And there very unusual fish with kind of tentacles a little bit like catfish, and someone had once said there were no big fish in that water, and I’m thinking, well, you know, these look as big as a person.

But then one comes out on land and I see that there’s something actually like they’re actually manmade on some level, or alien.  There’s kind of a plate near the back of their head that’s almost like you feel like they’ve been manmade or manufactured in some way, but they’re also intelligent. It’s like they try to communicate with us, and so we hurry off to work. And I start hiding from the boss that I even see or knew anything about the fish, but I break something so he knows I was in the room overhearing a conversation he was having about them, I think, but I try to act like it was the cleaning lady that dropped something on the floor and not myself and my sister or whoever I’m with.

And then to make our way back but, when I leave work to make my way back now, these alien fish-like people, I guess is what they are, are trying to communicate with me all the time and following me around or showing up where I am, and it’s like I’m a little freaked out by it. I don’t know quite what to make about it, that they’re doing this, because I don’t know what they are or what they’re about yet.

John: You’re using an image to try to portray how the breath works, and in the out-breath you come down and, when you hit the interval to where the out-breath turns to the in-breath it’s like being on the edge of a cliff in that you’re at the furthest point, so to speak, from the crown, and it seems that in this particular zone where you don’t have a lot going on for yourself in the outer, because you’re at this edge, nor do you have the inner on the return working, that you could’ve cracked up. You could’ve gone into a state of despair; but you didn’t. You didn’t go over the edge.

And so then you made the return back, and you’re making the return back, something comes out or opens up for you, and it’s these fish, and these fish have a kind of consciousness. In other words, who would guess that in the like in-breath coming back, going back to where you belong to a home, going back, that there would be such amazing consciousness.

And each time come to realize more and more of an intertwined linkage, or awareness, of what was opening up inside at some depth inside of yourself that is represented by these fish that are attempting to get your attention.

So you’re portraying the path. In other words, the first time you had to be rescued by kind of a grace because you were really under blizzard conditions, and you couldn’t see your way, and it was only fortuitous that something kind of worked out. And then the next time you started to recognize all of the plight of things that were there. And the third time you started to realize that there’s an awareness that is trying to get your attention.

What you’re basically describing is the awakening of the soul inside of yourself, in other words, the overallness of that. You’re portraying it just as if you’re discovering, as if you’re going through the various levels from beginning to end, like a one, two, three, three breaths, with the third breath getting to the point that you have a sense that what no one believed was possible is possible. It’s big, it’s there, it looks a little scary, but it’s trying to get your attention.

The fourth would be more of an aspect of completion then, because you would be allowing and accepting yourself to be carried away in that condition. And if you were to allow yourself to be caught up and carried away in that condition, what you would find would happen is that everything that you would be doing would all have to be oriented towards this quality of illumination – which means that you would be outside of the physical, outside of the emotion of things that tries to sort something out with the heart. You would be taking everything that is happening to you into this other zone, into this part of higher self. In other words, you’d be awakening to that realization that that’s what you really are all about.

Instead of quite coming to that full recognition, you came up to the point where you were aware that the consciousness is huge and that it was trying to get your attention, and that it was a little unnerving, and shocking, to see that it was like that. You got up to that particular point.

The next step after that would be to accept and be able to take and go into that. The problem that exists when you come up to this particular point where you now have to accept and go into that, is that as long as you’re still kind of in awe of it, or noticing that something like that kind of exists on the other side, you’re still in a position that is relatable to the lower-self elements of things where delirium exists, and where you can delude yourself.

But when you get to the point where something like that otherness takes over, so that everything about you is in conjunction with the soul of the whole, then whatever it is that happens in the physical, or in the outer, however it is that you are affected then, you have to take that affect and flip it as if, in order to see what it really is about in terms of something on the soul level.

Now when you start to function like that, you’re not going to make a lot of sense to a lot of people because people are still caught in their mind and their senses, and they’re going to have to perceive things in terms of how those things correlate or relate to them. And you’re not going to be effective like you might have been before when you are caught in belief systems. You’re not going to be effective at upholding the various stories, the storybook nature that people have, and that you have.

It gets to the point where even the physical ailments of yourself are not like physical ailments anymore, they also somehow or another have a meaningfulness in terms of the world soul. In other words, whenever you’re going through something that is affecting you physically, where most people would be dwelling upon their aches and pains, you would be inclined to look at that in terms of what is this about on the other side. How do I take and turn this into the big picture?

It’s a whole different frame of reference that almost looks crazy to a person who’s caught in the physical, because it’s almost like a type of denial from the perspective of something that’s caught in the physical, and it even can look like a denial to yourself because you are in the physical and you’re going to have these aches and pains, but these aches and pains and mannerisms to which you’re perturbed and upset, you kind of come to recognize that they point to something else and that something else that they point to is outside of a personal mannerism that you have been accustomed to seeing yourself under. They point to something in which you subtract yourself out and you start to see this being about the whole, or the soul, about everything that exists, and everything kind of goes into that as a quality of what’s really going on.

ima=098gesWe don’t always consider the importance of balance in our lives. But balance is something that the universe strives for in every moment, and that happens energetically first before it manifests in the material worlds. In our own journey, we are always seeking new elevations, but we must always have built a stable platform from which to make that climb, or a state of imbalance can occur. The higher we go, the more dangerous being out of balance can be for us.

Jeane: Well, I had another busy dream from which I seem to pull out bits, but I know that I was in a school setting, teaching with some other people, and we are overseen by a couple that I know that used to run seminars out of New York.

And there are several things that go on. At one point there are younger kids in the school kind of running around. I keep thinking we must teach with them, but we also seem to be apart from them somewhat with the group of us that are overseeing, like we must have some of our own activities that we do.

I don’t see that much of our interaction with the kids. They seem to be grade-school age. I know that we’re putting on some plays. I know that I think we teach something, but I don’t see that that much. I see more of my interaction with either the other teachers I’m with, or with the people that seem to be in charge of our group, the couple.

And then we also seem to come and go. Sometimes, because it feels like the school is down on ground level and maybe even some water nearby, and at times I know I went up into the mountains and, at one point near the end of the dream, I realize the teachers, or people who put on this play, we’ve been coached to go ask for a raise. And it had to do with the plays we are putting on or something we were doing there, anyway.

Before we went to get coached for that raise, it felt like I had left the school and gone up in the mountains and I observed kind of a crafty looking man that was kind of shady. I didn’t know what he was doing, and I had come back. And then when I came back to the school I realized that there’s probably a teacher in our group who’s closer to the supervisors, and I wonder if they coached her how to ask for the raise, but that the raise didn’t extend to us, but I don’t know quite how to figure that out.

And then I look around. I realize one of the rooms is empty, and I realize maybe school has let out for the summer, but it doesn’t feel quite right to me because I remember when I used to get let out of school for the summer, when you went to school that day everybody was kind of excited, and it was kind of chaotic, and I didn’t see anything like that in the kids during the day.

And then I leave. I go to where the rooms we stay in. I want to ask the other girl about the raise or something, and I just see her with the supervisor so that’s not quite the right time to ask. And then I go to my room; I saw some new people in one of the rooms, and I just see like a transparent beach ball in the hallway, so I’m pretty sure the school year has ended now.

I leave there and I seem to be in the mountains again, and I see that crafty looking man. I’ve gone past him and I’ve gone into a room and I see a filet of fish out on a counter, and a frying pan and something. And now another friend is with me and we decide we’ll go over and we’ll fry the fish.

As we go over to fry the fish, the man comes in and we try to hide the fish at first, but he just kind of jokes about how we’re about to eat his fish. So we go ahead and put our fish in the pan and we’re going to eat it with him, even though he’s this really kind of sleazy character, you know. That seemed to be where the dream ended.

John: So, you’re portraying an in-betweenness, in other words, where something isn’t as grounded, where you have a sense that’s not as rooted as it can be, nor is it as speeded up or expansive as it could be.

So you seem to be trying to sort something out from being in a position that’s able to look both up and look down. It’s kind of an interesting spot to be at, because you generally can only do one and not both. And to be at an in-between state it’s almost like you’re between two worlds.

So there’s two ways of looking at that. The one way is to assume that you need more grounding, but then if you had more grounding that would give up something in terms of the way you see something expansive. Another way of looking at it, is being in between going through the chaos of something that’s both up and down, or that lies in between is kind of a condition that’s very interesting if you can sustain something like that, because it’s a process that’s working on you.

In other words, this is almost like two dreams, in which in the first instance it’s being portrayed where you’re at, which you could say it’s almost kind of a miserable condition because human nature is to want to be in one direction, or the other, but not in between. And so, could it be said that that’s the setting, and then the second aspect, or the second half, is where from such a setting change comes through, or is evoked? Or, in other words, you’re able to be shifted, which would mean then that the first setting that would describe where you’re at is indicating that that may seem miserable or imbalanced, but the interesting thing about it is it is looking up, and it is looking down.

In other words, you’re able to kind of somehow or another have an understanding in both directions, and then that, then, because you’re not biasing yourself completely one way or the other, in other words you’re not getting your raise, and at the same time you’re not necessarily quite able to be in the setting with the teachers or with the students, that the combination of that ultimately results in a shift in which this enhances, or leads to a greater consciousness – even though maybe not at that point in time. In other words, it doesn’t seem like that when you’re in between.

And if it is subject to the second interpretation, which means that you’re like between two worlds, and that it’s good to be able to hold that place between two worlds, in holding that place between two worlds is where change is evoked, that’s where you are changed, that’s where you die before you die or, in this case, are filleted into a higher consciousness, the fish being a consciousness, the filleting of it, you being reshaped, re-groomed.

So even though you tell it as one sequence dream, it’s almost like a process of two dreams in which the first part would be portraying where you’re at, in which you’d be experiencing that as awkward because you’re in between both what is as far as a student, and what is in terms of a higher connection, and unable to quite make the higher connection, and unable to quite do the proper relatability to the average student – but you’re aware of that.

It’s kind of like being able in a dream to see something that you can’t reach, but the fact that you can see it and can’t reach it means that you’re going to eventually reach a point in yourself that you can make that step, because you’re seeing in both directions. It would’ve been one thing if the dream had been linear to where it was just one or the other, and then if you didn’t have, for example, the dilemma with the students going on and your attention was just upon trying to get the raise, or to get up above, and no attention to the fact that there was a gap in terms of relatability to the student, and you had just been dwelling in that direction, then one would have said that you’re not grounded enough, and that you’re aspiring too much so in one way where you don’t have the proper counterbalance.

But you seem to have both going on, which means that you’re balancing between two points, which is actually an interesting place to be in terms of how the dream portrayed that coming out because it led to a certain filleting, or letting go, or consciousness. Fish is always symbolic of an opening up of consciousness – and the fish are filleted.

And so your dream is kind of like letting you know what’s been going on and, instead of leaving it in kind of a miserable setting, is pointing out that there is a cadence that’s found.
