The Flip Side

upside-down-castle

It has been said that we live in a topsy-turvy world, i.e., we put all our focus on the things that don’t really matter and we ignore everything that truly matters – according to the purposes of the universe. Well, as we develop, we begin to get glimpses of this other side, the side that is connected to universal purposes rather than locked in to personal illusions. This dream portrays such moments, by showing the flipping upside down of rooms in a castle – which is a greatly expanded place, and state, to live in. (At the end of this post there are instructions and a link to download this recording to your computer.)

Jeane: So, in my dream, I’m in it feels like almost a large house. It’s kind of reminds me of old castles or something, but anyway I’m in the house. I’m more of an observer in this dream, and suddenly everything in the room just flips, like if it did a flip upside down and righted itself again.

And then I realized I’ve dreamt this before and that this is some kind of a contest going on. And so with a person in the room they were making everything flip, and maybe whoever flips best wins the contest. But I’m trying to figure out, because I know I’ve dreamt this before, I’m asking someone because I can’t remember, did the person and someone make everything flip?

And what I’m trying to figure out is whether when the person flips, what’s going on? Do they flip the whole building, or do they just flip a room in a building? Logic would tell me they just flip a room in a building, but I don’t really know. And I can’t remember from my past dreams. It’s got me so curious and I seem to be asking the person next to me, and am trying to figure this one out because I want to know how the flip happens.

John: The subject that one’s working with, the underlying subject that one’s working with, has to do with how the heart contends with everything in its surroundings. And so a heart that’s in a very, very limited surrounding generally doesn’t have much of a chance, because then it is staring at just what is densely hitting it in the face.

But you’re in a surrounding in which something has opened up in a greater dynamic way. In other words, you’re in a castle setting, so that you don’t have the usual defined conformities that keep you from being able to function, or resonate out.

In terms of the theme of the dreaming, because everything vies for the heart, you are coming to recognize that, in an in-between world, you’re going to have things that hurt and affect the heart, that are reflective in the outer, and then you’re going to have the aspiring part inside of you that tries to reach beyond all of that.

And, ordinarily, you cannot do that except in momentary instances when you totally surrender, or let go, and are able to find an acceptance in which you can function outside of the ordinary, imposed, status quo. The ordinary imposed status quo is a condition of consciousness in which you experience everything, you take into account everything, which means you are also taking in the direness of things, that too is coming into the heart; the stiffness, the awkwardness.

And so, when it’s like that, and you’re taking that in, then you’re limited. Only this dream is there to point out, and to talk about, the periods of time when you are able to escape such bondage, in other words, where you are able to rise above the typical human condition in which things are more or less held collectively in check – in terms of the human condition – by the fact that you’re taking in limitations, in the heart, as well as a higher quality way of beingness.

So, in order for you to get to a state in which this higher quality of beingness is able to move around, well it’s generally said that the soul moves around when you’re sleeping, it is not as confined by the throes of the outer, where the senses, and the mind, and the ego and all of that are going at it. In other words, the prisoner is not in such a castle anymore, supposedly.

Well, in the outer you can also get to a point where you have an openness in which the heart is free to where it doesn’t carry the anguish of outer afflictions that are noticeable in an environment that are all pervasive in a reflective outer environment. And so, when you don’t have that, you can find yourself flipping for a split moment in a way that exuberantly, inflectively, often times joyously, at other points in time it’s just a counterclockwise or something that catches everything by surprise. You can do this something that breaks the usual bondage, which is like the flipping, which is where you cause something to just flip.

So one’s been playing with this. It’s to be able to function in a wide open way, in a fairly continuous way, because one does not draw a form of attention in such a way that causes things to be questioned, or challenged, or have to be sorted out in terms of the reflective. The reflective can just accept it.

Because a human being has its limitations, you tend to get what’s called flip moments where something flips and usually they’re intervals, they’re intermittent, they’re not constant. And then the parameters of outer conditioning reimpose themselves.

And that’s why it is very, very, very difficult. You’ll notice that you don’t have a teacher come out and just go point blank bang, bang, boom, boom, hitting everybody in the jaw, straightaway, because that would be hitting the reflective, and then would cause a reaction that would rise up and tear away at this flip side state of overall beingness in an essence.

In other words, everything would struggle defensively. So what the teacher has to do, and this is the object lesson of how we’re dreaming and having to look at this, is that you have to find the way in which it is possible to touch things without causing trace elements of reaction.

The Energetic Dialogue

Jeane: This dream takes place in Denver, but I’m moving to Boise. Whether this move will be permanent, or just for school, I don’t know.

I’m living in my parents’ house and my sister lives there as well. I have a bedroom on the 2nd floor with a balcony that goes outside. In the process of getting ready to move I’ve stopped working and closed down my therapy office.

There’s a person I used to work with who is feeling neglected because I haven’t been spending much time with her. I’ve gone to visit someone else briefly and while there I get a phone call from a person needing emotional support.

The woman who’s feeling neglected shows up and knocks on the door. I introduce her to the person I’m with, but now I have to leave as that is my schedule. This will make the woman feel rejected again but I can’t help that.

I was able to ask her a question about some information that the person on the phone needed, but other than that I feel that she’ll just have to settle with what was given – that’s it, I’m moving on. I’m feeling a tug of guilt and stress from it, though.

I go home to find that my sister has disappeared and my mother is worried about her. I seem to think it will be okay. People are looking for my sister, but she doesn’t want to be found.

Sure enough, in the morning, when I go into the bathroom my sister knocks on the window – she’s outside my bathroom and I let her in. She’s okay, although I feel badly that she spent the night outside.

My mom comes and is happy that my sister is back. We’re all talking about my move to Boise and I’m joking with my mom that my sister is back, but she needs to understand that I do have to leave. We are having that dialogue when I wake up.

John: That’s a fairly complicated dream. At the very beginning it’s indicating that a side of you has opened up, but you are shutting it off, shown by your plans to move on.

This is what happens with a certain kind of spiritual illusion. You gain access to something inside of you, but then you reduce it to an idea, or perception, which blocks off that flow and inner communication.

The result is shown by the sister, who represents another part of you, being locked out. It’s interesting, because somehow you understood that and let the sister back in. However, you’re still moving on, so you are still shifting in terms of what you’re doing.

What this dream portrays is an energetic that functions as a part of you, but that doesn’t require you to do anything. It’s a kundalini energy. This energetic is so potent that it can cause collateral damage.

It works like this: If you are around a person who is very dense (based in the ego and external satisfactions) and you do something that lightens things up, a lot of their emotional baggage can rise to the surface. You’ll see this in terms of old patterns and defense mechanisms being activated – they can actually be darker for a while.

The same thing can be true for a person who begins meditating. Their life can actually become more miserable, for a period of time, as they churn up repressed material. Sometimes people quit because they become convinced the meditation is making things worse instead of better.

This can also happen as you make a shift to the next level inside yourself. Something new might be opening up – a kind of energetic dialogue – but it can also stir up old patterns. In your dream we see this old pattern as you being ready to leave town.

If you go with the old patterns, there is a type of substitution that occurs, replacing new for old (a sign of this might be seen by you leaving town without finding your sister in the dream). What is happening is actually a misuse of the sexual aspect of the kundalini energy. That can be a common practice today as the feminine is suppressed to become a more “functional” businesswoman, or other things like that.

So you have this new access; it’s kicking around. But you are not connecting with it as much as you could. You locked part of yourself out, and then recognized that that shouldn’t have happened. You open yourself up to let it back in.

Again, it’s not something that you’re capable of fully recognizing for what it is. It’s still too much. As a consequence, you continue to have to leave or go somewhere else – to go away from that energetic that needs to be alive and sustain itself.

The images show that you are going back and forth, trying to catch up to this kundalini energy. You’re not getting hit with it too directly, because it’s a language (like a sound, or a visualization, or a dream flow) that has a meaningfulness on the other side; it’s an energetic communication that maintains its hiddenness.

This language cannot be caught up to if you’re functioning at a lower speed. The dialogue and the recognition occur energetically. To “move away” from it is to still need to find a cadence and a balance that will enable you to catch up with and hear the dialogue.

We Are What We Radiate

John: I stayed up late last night because when I got back home there was a letter that needed my response. At some point, when it got really late, I began to think that this work could affect my sleep. But at the time, I thought doing it then would get it out of my system. It reminds me of your dream yesterday, which touched on this idea of not taking things so personally.

So I got caught up in the process of sending emails in response to this letter. What was really interesting is that while I was doing that, I was also thinking that the secret is to figure out how to conduct myself so that I’m not feeding an energetic animosity into what I’m doing, because I know that will embed itself into the physicality of things.

I thought handling the letter before bed had dispelled everything from my system, but I woke up still feeling it in my energetic. It just shows that when you carry a certain energetic or attitude, no matter how you carry it, you release it into the ethers of life.

A teacher used to describe how she would handle such situations. She could be fuming, but she always followed the rule that you don’t do anything that will upset another person. Instead she would flood them with a certain energetic, and then stand back and watch how the mirroring of that energy worked in them.

She said that you can reach a point where you look at yourself more or less through others, because in a sense you are no longer there (in a personal way). Then you can take and radiate this energetic outward and, instead of being caught up in the issue, a number of things can happen if the other person is receptive and responsive to it.

They can take on more light and glow, or it could also be a trigger that throws them around a bit. The average person releases a personal reaction because some part of their psychology has been swept up by the event. But this teacher knew she could not make progress that way.

Of course it requires the ability to be detached from the situation – to carry a perspective of a higher purpose. By her basically being absent from the situation, the other person can see, energetically, their own energy reflected back to them. That’s why it is compared to a mirror image of themselves.

Now what they see and feel of themselves might be good, or it might be too much for them to handle. People are not accustomed to a process like that, but at least what is being offered in that moment is a glimpse of the Divine, rather than  personal involvement which can deepen the separation and agitation that people get caught up in.

The theory, and the point behind all of this, is to be able to realize this aspect of life, and to reach this quality inside oneself. Then, what a person radiates into the world energetically can change the quality of things little by little. They can cause an energy that has been on a certain track to be changed, rerouted so to speak. Then for the next 1000 years it is different from what it was because an aspect of the Divine has been pulled into it.

We aren’t going to be doing that if we don’t speed up. Speeding up has to do with getting outside of the density of our physical (material) view of the world, and the reactivity (personal involvement) that we carry into everything we do. It means we have to be able hold onto a higher energetic level. That, of course, is why we practice repetition, and meditation, and all of these tools that are meant to help us deepen our connection to something more – to a greater energetic.

One way of looking at it is that you aren’t even getting spiritual or anything, because this energy does not belong to you. But you just have this higher energy coming through you, and it comes through for the whole of life. You still, as an individual, have all of your own nuances and mannerisms that are ingrained from your life, but you somehow are able to step away from all of that and bring this higher energetic quality through anyway.

That is one of the most important aspects of being in service – changing the energy we put into the world. If, like most people, we impose our own personal feelings and emotional behaviors, then the situations we find ourselves in will stay exactly in the condition they are currently in.

If we, instead, bring this other quality through, it can change life, the way life is meant to be changed. That is what it’s like to really be in this process.
