John: In this dream, I’m in an area that is going through some building renovations. The workers who are on the job seem to be doing it in great haste because they are leaving the walls all soapy and smeared.

Feeling the job can’t be left in that condition, I go to the sink and rinse out the sponges that they bring back. The sponges are all full of soap from having been used to wipe down the walls, so I’m rinsing them out and handing them back to the workers.

There is a woman who has an apartment that’s being affected by this work, and she is patiently waiting. I know it would be nice if she could get in to her apartment. She has been wiping down another area, outside of this one, that apparently has been affected as well.

The key in this dream is that I need to stay focused on rinsing the sponges. There’s a lot of talk and activity going on, and it’s almost too much. In order to get the walls wiped down and keep them clean, I have to keep moving to get the sponges properly rinsed out and ready for the next section.

At the same time I haven’t yet figured out how to accommodate the woman’s need to rinse her sponge, as I’m busy doing that for everyone working in my area.

I think the meaning and significance of this dream is that it’s indicating that an issue has gotten too big. There’s a way of jumping so deeply into things in life that we can reach a point where we’re no longer able to take care of the clean up, or management, of it. When that happens, things begin to get chaotic and out of control.

This dream seems to indicate that that’s all there is to the problem – it’s something that can be cleaned up or put back in order with a little effort and attention. Currently, it’s being done hastily and left in a mess, but that can be overcome.

On a level closer to my waking life, I suppose this scenario could represent a project I have become involved with across the street, where there’s a proposal to put in a business that would involve venting the building and will involve disturbing others who are opposed to it.

This project will create issues that will require a certain cleaning up of the energetic, because it could violate the interests and expectations of others. The way the whole idea for this project was presented, it threw off the balance of things. In other words, it put suds in the works. What needs to happen is for everything to be kept in balance in terms of the appearance and needs of others.

This is a good example of how waking life can be reflected in our dream life, and the issues that confront us each day can be given a fuller picture, and lead us to greater clarity, in our efforts to navigate our life. If we listen to our inner guidance, many things will become clear.

John: Last time we ended with a voice in my dream saying,You have a call from all sources of what is going on, and a minute amount of awareness about it .” (For the background to this discussion, see A Touch of Mink, and Seeing the Light Beer.)

So I seem to have a minute understanding, based upon comparative experience, to know when something needs to be poured out (the beer), versus when it is to be ignored and remained bottled.

My first dream had to do with having to contend with mink energy, which is set in its nature but tends to be fairly refined compared to squirrel energy, which forages about in life and tries to make the best of a situation.

And squirrel energy is progressive. It might be a little frenetic as it accumulates things. It can even tend to hurt the subtle unfolding, but it definitely gets the attention of that which is old guard and trying to maintain the status quo.

That which is trying to maintain its status quo  – the mink energy – sits behind its established security (the gated area), but tends to lose, over time, its connection to its surroundings. In other words, what is peripheral starts to fall away, and the old guard energy becomes more and more isolated in how sustains and maintains itself.

That’s what old energy tends to do – it gets isolated and disconnected, whether we are speaking of old patterns, old leadership, or old civilizations. New energy coming in, which functions on a similar parallel but is still active and vibrant, tends to create a stir energetically, and instigate change while the status quo tries to maintain its perimeters and resist any change.

In life today, what is going on is that at the very top echelon of things we have an attempt to maintain a status quo, and to some degree that defense of the established system can be vicious. And the mink is one of the most ferocious of all the weasels, even though it’s not often thought of that when it’s admired for it’s beauty. It’s viewed as something to attain, to reach, and then to maintain and protect and ward off other aspects in life.

So the squirrel is viewed as something that creates a disturbance that disrupts the tranquility of things, yet at the same time it can bring about greater awareness – if it’s doing it consciously instead of chaotically. It can cause a greater awareness of the aspects of life that have been neglected for so long, but need to be awakened to and appreciated, i.e., the spiritual aspects.

So that was the first dream and then it progresses to the second dream in which there are two qualities, or states, of life – the spiritual and the cultural, or the inner and the outer – that have been separated, and if no action is taken they will stay separated. But if we learn how to press on something, to instigate an awakening, we can cause a change in the flow.

Then something new and different can occur. How do we know when it’s time to do that or not? Well, the imagery of the third dream, with the beers, offers us a clue: a Budweiser is considered a beer of the present, of the common man, and the Miller beer is a beer that used to be seen as common and then became somewhat more sophisticated before it fell out of sight.

No one thinks much of a Miller beer anymore. Anyone who used to order a Miller beer, now orders a Bud. A Bud under most conditions is fine but if you’re dealing with something that’s a little more gentrified, a Miller is actually a better tasting beer. Nobody thinks of that. Most don’t make that subtle distinction.

This is some sort of pun in my dream, where I’m drinking that which is common in life and then I realize that that which is uncommon in life remains bottled, unopened. Then I progress to where I pour the beer into a glass (to bring it back into an aliveness instead of it letting it remain shut off), and it seems to create a possibility where it can be appreciated more.

When it becomes something that’s more appreciated, and I’m able to know the difference between the two, that’s when it’s assumed that I’m developing a sense of what is going on in terms of various energetic levels, because there are different stages of things awakening.

When we develop an understanding of what is going on then the next thing that needs to happen is for us to pull out some “minute amount of awareness about it.” In other words, it’s going on for a reason in terms of that which is designed, and we need to be conscious of that process.

I guess that’s the sense that I have inside, that somehow we need to find a way to be able to keep shifting, and accommodating, that which is important to a situation, and to an occasion in life. No matter where we go or what we do, we need to keep that awareness and stay with the flow. We need to balance the guidance of the inner to what is happening in our outer lives.

John: I have a couple little dreams and the first is: I’m in a situation in which the way to make something happen is to press down on a device. Maybe I have to press down three, four, or five times, but if I don’t press down on the device, nothing changes.

It’s like that. When you firmly press down on it you change the flow but, if you don’t, what exists goes on as usual.

I wake up somewhat surprised that nothing has changed and that the current situation continues. But I see that nothing will change unless I take an action to change the way things can unfold. Somehow I’m surprised that it actually works that way.

This is what I’m being shown in the dream – that things work that way. At first it makes no sense to me – it requires deeper understanding. It’s suggesting that I have an effect upon what unfolds, even though I’m not inclined to believe this as being literally true.

That’s the first dream.

In the second dream I wake up at the end of it when a person makes the following statement to me, “You have a call from all sources of what is going on, and a minute amount of awareness about it.” The person who says this seems to make the statement at a most unusual moment in the dream.

It begins with me sitting around with a number of other guys. I have a Bud Light that I have apparently ordered and I’m drinking it separately, by myself. As I’m drinking it I find myself, out of the blue, ordering a case of Miller Lite to go all around the table.

I take a bottle of Miller Lite and pour it into a glass. As I drink it, I find it’s really good. Another guy asks if the beer can be put into a glass and I kind of nod in the affirmative because that’s what I’ve done: why not put it in a glass?

But then I go off on a rampage. I had been drinking the Bud out of a bottle and I’m announcing that it’s just absolutely horrible. Who ordered this stuff? I say, never let me order this ever again. It’s nearly undrinkable.

My demonstrative, reactionary behavior causes a scene. I’m so loud it’s obvious to everyone, and they can see that I’m serious. I’m so over-the-top about this beer being bad that everyone just starts laughing and laughing.

I sell them completely on the idea that it’s bad because I really believe it. They find it funny that I’m drinking something that’s that horrible. Then one guy, who had been laughing with everyone else, looks at me in a strange, somewhat serious way, and makes the statement that jars me awake: “You have a call from all sources of what is going on, and a minute amount of awareness about it. “

What does this show me? These two dreams are a continuation of the ideas expressed in the dream earlier that night (see A Touch of Mink).

Next time we’ll look at how all three play off the same central themes.
